If you are in a situation where you feel threatened enough to seek a protective order, it is NOT advisable to share details on a public board. Even anonymously. It's a smaller world than we often think, and family abuse situations are at their most dangerous when you try to sever ties.
OP, don't say more. Most jurisdictions' court system websites have information about securing a protective order under "family law" or "domestic relations." You can also contact legal aid if you don't have funds or a good family lawyer. If you feel like your child is in danger call the police.
Be forthright with your child's school. Student safety is their number one responsibility.
To all of the people demanding info: don't do that in the future when someone is talking about potential abuse or stalking. If OP doesn't have enough to get a protective order the court or counsel will say so. There's no need to adjudicate it here and a serious downside to sharing details.
Sorry to rain on the prurient parade.
I am the pp you are referring to and your characterization is incorrect. I mean that the OP should not disclose her details and that other posters should not request such details on a forum like this. The risk of retribution if she's exposed is too great. The question whether the order would be granted is for the court to decide or an attorney to advise her at the outset.
Not OP but very glad you posted this, it's important advice for many. So many DCUMers feel entitled to the gory details... but good to know that not only are the gory details none of their business if OP asked a basic question; there are also actual legal reasons NOT to post details.
Thanks you!
I think PP meant that some people think getting restraining orders is as easy as it appears on TV. It is not. Before a court will issue one, you have to prove that there is some danger to you. Most courts won't order a behavior to stop unless there's proof that it's happening.

We haven't had to go this route with my parents (thankfully) but they are abusive and crazy in a way that other people don't get. Do what you need to do to keep you and your family safe. Good luck!
If OP said here are the reasons we believe we need a PFA, people would be more understanding. In the absence of evidence, it makes it unclear that it will be possible to get one. You do need to have some evidence and can not get one just because you want it.
