My son has Liberty sports goggles and wears them happily for soccer and other sports. They cost way less than $200! Sorry I don't remember how much they were, though. Call around to the local chains.

My kid wouldn't be able to see the ball if he went without his glasses (heck, neither could I.)

When I played sports, I went without my glasses. They were broken once and I didn't want to take any chances. Also, if your kid gets braces be sure to get a mouthgaurd

OP again - thanks all around for the great suggestions. I appreciate DCUM! We definitely will get him some sort of sports goggles.... not in time for the first practice (I think I'll have him go without rather than break his regular glasses or hurt himself), but hopefully before the first game.

As a glasses wear and a kids coach, please, invest in the sports goggles for your child. They can prevent a potential catastrophic injury - and if nothing else, will save his everyday glasses from getting destroyed.
I would have no qualms about buying online or going to a place like WalMart or HourEyes for these. You can almost certainly get them for less than $100.

Our DS got sports goggles at Walmart. He says they're comfy and has no problem wearing them for basketball and soccer, which are the two sports he plays. They were MUCH cheaper than the name brand Rec Specs and have held up for two years now.
He did play in his regular glasses for a year without a problem, but the kept slipping down his nose when he got sweaty. He couldn't understand why he kept missing foul shots, but he couldn't see! He also never pushed them up.... When his prescription took a turn for the worse, I just took him for the goggles and he never complained.
Let him pick them out - who cares if the goggles are lime green! If he likes them, he'll wear them.
