I watched Blackfish and there is a part where they say the orca mother is making a long range call for her calf. So sad.

Except that that wasn't actually an orca vocalization. The producers dubbed some other animal making a vocalization over that scene.

Ok, to the Sea World defender on this thread -- just because you don't know where the orca sanctuary might be, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Second, even if an orca call to a calf were dubbed, it's totally believable that these high order mammals do in fact vocalize to one another and a dubbed call might not be misleading -- omitting it would be misleading if the video recording didn't capture the audio. Also, even if no vocalization had been made, that's irrelevant. A large and growing contingent of the public find the captivity of orcas at Sea World to be unethical.

Then tell me where the sanctuary is, since you are so certain of its existence.

The call was dubbed because the whales were not actually in distress when the video was taken, because SeaWorld does not separate calves from their mothers. The whole scene was made up to manipulate viewers.

A large and growing contingent of the public also thinks Donald Trump would be a good president. Does this mean the Donald should be our next commander in chief?

Total assumption on your part.

Or the observation of marine biology experts, who probably know more about the subject than editors/producers.

Has your google searching turned up an orca sanctuary yet? No? Keep looking.

I go to circuses that don't use animals other than dogs and horses, which are domesticated.

I do go to the zoo, because I believe the zoo is focused on conservation in a way that Sea World and Ringling Brothers are not.

Even if Sea World does not separate newborn calves and mothers, they are inseminating whales in captivity, and eventually separating the calves and mothers -- in the wild they would be together MUCH longer.
How are they extracting sperm from orcas? This is just gross, and for what? Corporate profit. Disgusting.

While SeaWorld used to capture wild orcas, they no longer do this anymore. Nevertheless, I have no interest in going to SeaWorld or supporting their business.

Fixed that for you. I wish I could fix your gullibility, but that's something you'll have to do on your own.

How is it propaganda? It's not like orcas jumped into sea world's tanks of their own volition and refused to leave captivity.

Well first off, the film has a lot of misleading inaccuracies, if not outright lies. And second, the vast majority of, if not all the whales at Sea World were born in captivity. They have never lived a day in the wild.

Fine, easy solution: let the moms live out their lives in sanctuary and release the calves once they are old enough. The cycle ends here.

Again, where are these sanctuaries?

1) OP, no, like you, I can't stand it. Will never go to Sea World now that I know what I know.

2) PP, we do not go to circuses except those with domesticated animals, such as the Big Apple Circus, which only has dogs and horses. And they are big on humane treatment of all the animals under their care. Zoos? We go to zoos but we research them ahead of time. We go to National Zoo but do NOT go to local rinky-dink ones like Reston Zoo (TERRIBLE history there) or other ones like this.

SeaWorld is accredited by the same organization that accredits the National Zoo.

I agree with you on the Reston Zoo.

I think the performance and corporate profit aspect of Sea World is disturbing, and, as PP pointed out, the life spans of the animals is drastically less than in the wild, which isn't necessarily true for zoo animals (the opposite is often true in those cases). The concrete tanks that Sea World uses doesn't even begin to approximate the wild habitat of the orca. They aren't even around so much as a plant.

As for zoos, I do have a problem with larger higher order mammals in captivity, like elephants and apes. I also find it unethical for animals whose instinct is to roam large areas like large cats who will never get to run at full speed in a zoo. I find animals in captivity an incredibly depressing thing and i have hated the times I've gone with my kids. I get that it's something to do with kids, but I wish it weren't because I get a sad feeling whenever I'm there. And, we have a pretty good zoo compared to most around the country/world.

Except you don't actually KNOW anything. You've chosen to believe a film by propagandists that lied to you.
