if your child needs the differentiation and any support, I would encourage you to stay through 3rd at least especially if you're not unhappy just curious.

I don't think you'll get any kind of an answer here - you'll need to ask this question of the schools that you are interested in. At our very small school, the "highest" reading group in 2nd grade seems to be reading books at the Magic Treehouse level. This is a lower level than what DS reads at home, but I also see that the books they read at school have specific content (for instance, there were a few books about different presidents), and therefore the teacher needed to pick books that weren't Harry Potter/Diary of a Wimpy Kid type books.

Why are you leaving?

We are at a very small school. As my child gets older, I am interested in exploring some of the social/extra curricular options at the bigger private schools. I'm not yet sure we are leaving...we are exploring our options. But I am concerned about the loss of differentiation if we move. I still don't have a sense of what books teachers are using in classes to teach/for reading groups (as opposed to what children read/enjoy on their own time).
