Kwanzaa starts 12/26.

BTW DCUMers, Kwanzaa is NOT a religious holiday. Mainstream AA Muslims don't celebrate it so pork at Kwanzaa is not an issue. Growing up, we always had pork in our greens on the last night of Kwanzaa. The last year I celebrated it, my aunt switched to smoke turkey wings because she doesn't really live us anymore.

It might be hard for a 13-year-old to say no to a pushy grandparent, maybe?

I'm a none pork eater, raised that way due to my parents religion but I've had it maybe a handful of times in my life. I woudn't go nuts over it. He may actually end up really liking it no matter what your rules are. Although my parents didn't allow us to eat any pork growing up my brother loves pork and ham and eats it regularly.

He is 13. Unless your dad hid pork inside something and told your son it was vegetarian, I don't understand the issue. Pork is delicious and your son is old enough to decide what he wants to eat.

Pork is awesome!! What's the big deal.

If you're Jewish I can understand. But even if you're vegan, I think the son has a right to decide what he wants to eat and follow in his life.

Is this a religious thing? If so, then yes, that's very disrespectful. If not, then I'm not I understand the problem - is your teenager not allowed to try new foods in your absence?

Depending on why you don't want your son to eat port (health, religious reasons), I'd be mad at your father. Yes your son is 13 and old enough to say no, but a family member shouldn't put him in the position of choosing to follow rules you have set. I don't care how minor the rule is. If your father "forgot," that is one thing to consider though. I remember an uncle once telling me all the reasons it was better to be an atheist than to be religious. I come from a very religious family and was 17 at the time. While I was old enough to know what I believed, I still felt awkward about being in a conversation in which my uncle was essentially telling me my parents were wrong, all the church leaders I respected were wrong, and I was wrong. And that he knew better. I wasn't sure how to be polite and respectful to an uncle I loved without contradicting him, and also standing up for my own beliefs and parents. It was a completely unnecessary conversation, as I recall. It wasn't as though I'd asked him why he was an atheist, it just came out of the blue.

13 month old? Pissed. 13 year old? Unless your father snuck a ham and cheese sandwich into your kosher home, or there is an allergy, you're overreacting.

Your son is 13? I thought this was about a toddler!
