I think Amsterdam it is -- I agree re: Nova Scotia -- I think my husband and I would like it, but there aren't many things that the 17yr old and toddler would both enjoy.
I did think about just my SD and I going, but I know her dad won't go for that --she lives in another state, so we don't see her that much.
I'm still back and forth about splitting it between Paris and Amsterdam and just Amsterdam, but leaning towards just Amsterdam. Maybe we'll do an overnight in Paris and keep most of our stuff in Amsterdam.

Ooh! Best idea yet, although it may not be viable.
I made this suggestion because we lived in Europe for several years when my daughter was a toddler and we traveled a lot to take advantage of the opportunity but it was not ideal. Yes, we gotta go places but we never *really* enjoyed them. We always felt it was easier to stay home rather than try to find activities we could all enjoy, work around meal and nap times, and so on. It got easier as she got closer to 4, that is, right before we moved back to DC. I always advise that if you don't *have* to go on a trip to Europe with a toddler, that you co sider waiting so you can all enjoy the trip and make better use of your money, time, and effort.

For Reykjavik keep in mind that two of the biggest attractions are hot springs and day trips from Reykjavik (7-14 hr trips in a van or bus seeing various natural wonders). Neither might be that great with a toddler. You can walk around the city itself and have a pleasant day but I probably wouldnt go just for that.
I would definitely add another city, whether its Paris or London or maybe a smaller city like Bruges.

Any chance you and stepdaughter could take the trip and husband and toddler could stay home? Doesn't sound like the latter two would enjoy this trip. You and SD could make a nice jaunt out of Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris...
