It's awesome. Cheap, easy (once you get used to it, which is easy also) and non-hormonal and non-invasive. Immediately reversible i.e. dont put it in if you TTC.

And very unreliable. The diaphragm with spermicide is how I became unexpectedly pregnant with my first child. it has a typical use effectiveness rate somwhere around 80%. Wish my doc had told me that when I asked for it.

Might be ok only if always used in combo with spermicide and condom.

My 2nd pregnancy was pretty difficult and having more children wasn't part of the plan for me. Since I had an emergency C, at just under 36 wks, with #2 and I had thought about a tubal for all of 10 minutes the day prior, I was in no place to make that decision on the day I delivered. I had paragard years ago and it was very effective but the cramps were debilitating. Due to continuing hypertension post partum, the mini pill was the only option. Medically, it is not advised for me to have additional children so choosing something permanent wasn't hard for me. I ultimately had an ablation procedure. It's not to be used as birth control, it's a procedure to address erratic periods or menorrhagia with a side effect of eliminating the endometrial layer in your uterus. No endometrial tissue, no where for an embryo to implant. The younger you are when you get it, the more likely you are to need the procedure again as some endometrial tissue can regrow. It's been 4 years for me and I've not had a period. I do cramp when I ovulate, but no hormones and I can go through menopause naturally. Best decision I've ever made.

You won't notice the IUD strings. I got a Mirena at 40 and love it. Will get another one.

The effectiveness of the diaphragm is a lot lower than the other methods being discussed here:

Yes, that's why. Your cervix is closed tight. It would be open a bit if you'd had vaginal deliveries.

I had this issue too - try again when you have your period. Worked easily.

Snip for DH is what we're going to do.

I had a Paraguard briefly and hated it -- made my periods much heavier and more difficult. I don't want hormonal birth control. Both my mother and sister had problems with it and I don't want to chance it for myself. To date we've only used condoms, because we weren't really that concerned if I did get pregnant. After our last child, though, DH will get a vasectomy. Less invasive for him to do that than for me to get a tubal, unless I do wind up with a c-section, which hopefully I will not.

I used mini-pill while I was breastfeeding, then back on the regular pill, then got a Mirena IUD, best birth control ever! Took me all the way to menopause.

I have a mirena. Oh, and we barely have time to have sex.
