As a college professor, I would hope that you are teaching your students that there is a meaningful difference between opinions that are actively xenophobic and based on lies and opinions that are simply different from their own. Trump has repeatedly lied about things that are verifiable, suggested policies that are unconstitutional, made comments that are blatantly racist, and shown absolutely no remorse for this behavior. I would be utterly delighted to not be exposed to his ideas - not just because I disagree with them, but because they are antithetical to pretty much everything I believe - and if I found out that a close friend or relative agreed with those things, I would not want to associate with that person any longer.

It's not about whether Trump is making good or rigorous arguments. It's about making sure your precious snowflakes enter a world understanding it is always best to hear opposition viewpoints and learn to argue against them. Don't advocate running into a homogenous corner where you simply ignore ideas that repulse you. Fight back. Intellectual weaklings flee.

People should be more humble about their political views. OP, there are people who are smarter, more reasonable, and more knowledgeable than you who are on the opposite side from you on literally every political issue. Including Trump. This is not true only for you, however, it is true for me and for everyone else.

Maybe you should try understanding your husband's views rather than freaking out because what, after all, might the neighbors think?

I thought the the "attitude" being referred to was the attitude of just throwing away family (or a husband) when they are no longer perfectly aligned with you in every way.

OP, I can't get past Trump's bigotry. His celebration of his bigotry. Even if someone agreed with trump somehow on other stuff, doesn't his racism kill any support for him? Is your DH bigoted in general? And if not, doesn't this aspect of Trump disgust him?

I can tolerate a lot of differences in opinion, but I can't tolerate bigotry. If this is in fact an issue in your marriage, I'd probably seek counseling for that.

Leaving politics out of it for a moment, I used to admire Hilary. In 2008, I very much hoped she would get the nomination instead of Obama. But this past year I can't help but be disgusted by her "I'll do anything to get elected and pretend to be anything to appeal to people" aura. Blech. Maybe it's not all about misogyny for your husband. Obviously I don't know him so I don't know. But it could be that he just senses something awful about her.
