DH (who is not elderly) had a heart attack 4 months ago and I totally understand the desire not to travel although he's technically cleared to travel. Get some perspective, OP.

Not unless they suggested that OP and her family get nonrefundable tickets. Also, since apparently traveling to NYC in January is no big deal for this elderly couple after a recent heart attack, surely OP can make it to NYC with her family to enjoy the time there. I cannot imagine asking my parents for the money - Oh dad, since you aren't feeling well enough to travel because of the HEART ATTACK YOU JUST HAD, can you refund my money? You don't say how old they are, but I think when making major travel plans with older folks you have to accept a certain probability of health-related cancellation. Things come up and they're sometimes much less able to bounce back from stress and cope with the strain of travel. Especially NYC in January.

Totally normal and warranted.
Would you want to be that far away from your doctors and hospital a few months after a heart attack?
I'm in healthcare and if one of my patients asked my general advice about it (I'm not a cardiologist) I would say if they are stressed and anxious about it even a little, don't do it.

Yeah, cut him some slack. My 74 year old mother had her first brush with mortality this year and it has hit her very hard. She was successfully treated for stage 0 or I breast cancer, but she describes it as "a bomb going off in her life."
