I'd be concerned about the safety issues... especially since many have caught fire.

But in terms of price... that's up to your sister, not you.

I didn't think $500 is too much for a 12 yr old, but I don't like the hoverboards.

I had a budget of about $150/kid but then I found something AMAZING so now we are at 250/kid.

Maybe I'll look at the 300 pc magnatiles set since I'm on a budget blowing roll...

OP, I would mention the safety issues to your sister. As far as the price goes, let your sister decide what to spend on her kids. Even if she can't really afford it, it's not your business unless she specifically asks.

Several airlines have banned people bringing them on board or in bags. They seem dangerous and some have caught on fire.

So while it's none of your business, as others have said, no I wouldn't get one for my kid for the cost and danger factor.

The cheap ones are having safety problems.

Airlines are banning them as checked or carry-on bags, for example, because of the batteries.

I'm the pp with the 5 year old. I read some research and found out that a lot of kids are getting hurt on hoverboards and they are outlawed in some cities. So no, I wouldn't get one for him when he gets older.
