I would completely agree that a Wii would have been a better choice for a 7 year old. But if we're talking about a tween/teen- I think you're wasting your money on a Wii.
Last time I checked, you can't get Madden or NBA for Wii, and that's what ds and his friends spend most of their time playing.

and a lot of the games require the annual membership for online gaming. otherwise they aren't really fun.

If he specifically mentioned Xbox then he knows what he wants. Ie no PS or Wii. Get the Xbox one which is the most current version. There are kid friendly and family games and new games come out all the time.

We have all of these systems. By far, my tween boys get the most play out of the PS4.
When they were younger, they played a lot of Wii/WiiU because they loved the Mario titles and other kid-friendly titles. I know some guys who are older though, who love it because they like the Amiibos. The Mario/Donkey Kong/Kirby/Zelda titles for kids are pretty much the best around.
Now that they are a bit older, they prefer PS or Xbox because the more mature games are available for it. These games are often MUCH more mature, though. (Dark and violent as other people pointed out.)
If you want more titles to be available, the PS3 or Xbox 360 is the system to get. They are not the most recent version, but that means they have lots of games out for them already. A lot of those games are also less expensive because they have been out for awhile. However, new games are not going to be coming out for these systems. The new games will come out for the PS4 or the Xbox One.
Xbox One vs. PS4. I think games play better on the PS4. Xbox One can be glitchy and I haven't had those problems with PS4. Both Xbox One and PS4 have some good games available for younger kids -- Lego Dimensions and Disney Infinity are both pretty cool. All of the Lego games are awesome.
