PP here, just saw OP mentions Kingstowne and Reston, disregard my comment. Reading Comprehension!!

OP was talking about Old Town Alexandria, so suburban communities like those found in Ashburn, Western PW, Lorton and Kingstowne might not fit what they are looking for at this time. Yes, they are nice communities, but might not be what the OP desires.

I disagree. Kingstowne is a great community. The HOA manages three community centers all featuring various activities including ones aimed at older residents and the county's Lee Rec center is nearby. There are condos near the lake by Top Golf and behind the main shopping center that are lovely. There are also 2 story homes down a block from Top Golf that would be easier to manage (i.e. less stairs) than a TH.

Kingstowne has its own farmers market, an active residents association, lots of activities around holidays, etc.

Another option is Lorton at the town center. Less shops than Kingstowne but still a nice assortment of restaurants and definitely nice community amenities.

The options out in western PWC, Loudoun, and western FFX are also nice - just depends if you prefer to be closer to DC or not.

Winchester, Harrisonburg, Blacksburg.

I would stay away from Kingstowne-type master planned communities as it does not sound they would have the charm you are looking for in your description. What about:

Reston has a lot of community infrastructure for seniors - classes, groups, indoor swim spaces, community activities, volunteerism. You could do a Town Center condo or a TH near a lake for that price range. On the lakes is usually more 700 and up but there are some THs by Lake Anne that would be in the range. Wouldn't it be nice to pop out on to your pontoon boat with some wine and cheese to enjoy on the lake?

Look at Providence Square condos in Fairfax City, walkable to shops, restaurants, county library - several 3 bedroom floor plans over 2000 ft, should be in 650 range, may have to wait for something to come on market

Also, the Byron in Falls Church City, might be a bit over price range, look at 2 bedrooms plus dens that come on market
