Helmet every time or skateboard is gone.

n 2012, thirty skateboarders lost their lives. This report includes two skateboarders who suffered their accidents in 2011, but did not pass away until days or months after the original incident.

It is important to note that all thirty deaths occurred in a roadway. Two occurred despite the helmets they wore. The fatalities included the youngest, an eight year old child, who was butt boarding down his driveway and rolled into his neighborhood street. The eldest was a veteran skateboarder and long time mentor, advocate and former shop owner in Chicago, skating to his car.

As you read each name please note how the tragic accident occurred due to unforseen circumstances. It is obvious from previous reports (and this one) that the number one cause of death for skateboarders is bodily blunt force trauma caused by a collision with a vehicle, even one as small as a motorcycle.

We have a skate boarding park near us in Herndon, and I was driving by there when lots of emergency personnel went by, and the skateboarder ended up dying. Here are some other stories of losses if it helps persuade your son.

This tradgedy of another Fallen Skater happens far more often than Skaters realize or want to admit. According to CDC, In 2010 over 28,000 Skaters were admitted to Emergency rooms nationwide with brain trauma. That works out to an average of 3 per hour 24/7. Our son 28yo son, Ian Tilmannn suffered a similar fate in 2005 who died from brain trauma while Longboarding with no helmet.
