THIS! There are a few Nickelback songs I like, and a few I turn off, but every time I hear John Mayer I get the heebs. That breathy high voice and his reputation, ew. Though he does seem like a good guitarist.

I don't like their music, but I don't hate them. They're not interesting enough to hate. They're just another boring bland band that came about in the pop culture wasteland of the early 2000s that also gave us Staind, Puddle of Mud, Incubus, etc.
I mean, if you listened to mainstream rock radio back then, you remember...it was even worse than it is now, what with all the faux-sensitive-alt-bro indie rock Mumford Leon Hozier nonsense.

Rock star is actually intended to be ironic/self deprecating I think. I've always listeneed to it as a self-aware statement on why people hate their band so much. So, I love it
