OP here. He is extremely responsible and good with his money but he is also exceptionally generous and makes sure I am want for nothing even with our current salary. If I want something, he makes sure I get it.

He is a perfect partner. I just get worried about the cost of living in this area and realize that everyone with 2 kids has like over 200k salary. We barely make a 100k now and neither of us is in banking or law or medicine.

I just don't want to be 35 and stressing about money with 2 kids and a house.

I have a friend in Northern VA with 2 kids and making under 200K, does just fine.

People make the cost of living in this area a bigger deal than it really is. You don't need a 5K sq ft house. It is all about doing your research and finding reasonable priced housing.

What field is he in? if it's something like accounting, it starts off pretty good at like 60k and then tops out at a couple hundred thousand, absolutely MAXIMUM.

If its accounting....dump him.

That's actually really good for that age. I made a little less than that at the same age. Then I asked for $20k more at my next job...and the next one...and the next one I went for $40k more. You guys are babies - you never know how life will change and move. One of you might be unemployed. Just life within your means, and being "poor" won't be your biggest problem.

It's hard to say, OP. I wondered this before marrying my DH, who also doesn't make tons of money (about 120k now in his 40's).

But I loved him, and going through the poor years together was good for our marriage, believe it or not. Growing together is very romantic.

I will say this.

Since he's not terrific "on paper" then definitely don't make any compromises in the love-him-to-death department. If you're going to marry someone who makes less then other men available to date, you should adore him and have confidence that he'll make a great husband. Otherwise, throw him back.

Agreed but for your sake OP. You shouldnt be saddled to someone without the option of SAHMing if you want or even making ends meet at the lifestyle you want.

Just say no.

Marry him, take out expensive life insurance, kill him (make it like like an accident), $$$$

You sound spoiled AND greedy. For his sake, move on. He deserves true love. Not someone in love with his bank account.

Seriously? I'm 40 with two kids and DH and I both make about 65k, we do just fine. Are you looking to not work and have your man support you?
