I try to drive courteously. Allow enough space so someone can change lanes. Stop at intersections so someone can walk across. Give bikes a wide berth. Slow through residential neighborhoods etc

I make eye contact and say thanks.

Go out of my way to achknowledge others.

It doesn't come naturally to me. I'm not cruel, but I am depressed and therefore wrapped up in just how to get through the day. I'm overwhelmed and simply remembering to say thank you is sometimes tough.

It's hard to remember to say thank you only to service workers or to everyone, including loved ones?

Everyone. It's just more un-PC to forget to say it to service workers.

I hope you feel better soon. When I don't want deal with people, I shop online, including grocery delivery. It helps.

Are you doing it because you believe in karma or because it's the right thing to do in and of itself

I've offered to help moms overloaded with strollers and kids in the metro system, especially around elevators. I've helped people with their bags or lifting heavy stuff into cars, and I'm good about holding doors/elevators for people. I try to be considerate on Metro. I will discreetly tell strangers when they have a tag sticking out, toilet paper on their shoe or food in their teeth. I've offered to take pictures of tourists a few times, and I'm good about giving directions or recommendations to visitors. I try to be considerate when driving. I compliment people if they have awesome hair or a great outfit. If I have a lot of groceries and someone comes after me with just a few things, I let them go first.

This stuff has mostly come back to me, karma-wise - I've found most people in general to be pretty polite, other than some pretty bad drivers.
