Would just like to add that DW and I (I'm also a woman) have a son from mini IVF and are trying for a second now. We use a directed (known) donor and we had to jump through a ton of hoops - psych consults, donor taking MMPI-2, meeting with a social worker - and pay a TON of money just because we used a known donor. Some clinics refuse to work with you if you use a directed donor because of (I guess) liability. From what I understand, all of this is required when using a surrogate - in fact, it's even more intense I think. So I get what you're saying, but there are still many restrictions here.

There's an older article in Newsweek about this. Clearly there are people in the US looking for alternate routes.
