Most of the Gingkos you will find now in commerce are the non-fruiting hybrids or 'male' and Gingkos, especially the dwarf varieties are a spectacular choice but Gingkos don't really fit the criteria of deep shade. Rhododendrons in the DMV are very very tough to grow but the ones that do well - do very well but heat and humidity their enemies.

+1 for rhodies! Also, though incredibly expensive hellebores are lovely, fragrant mounding perennials.
