$250/light for recessed cans that doesn't include the switch or patching? Man I'm in the wrong biz. If you have access to the top of the cans (like in the attic) adding recessed cans and a new switch is actually pretty easy. The posts on here just remind me why I do this stuff myself.

Regarding the ceiling fans.. It certainly isn't a 30 min job if there isn't a properly reinforced ceiling fan box in the ceiling, but it sure shouldn't cost over $1k for a few fans. If you have an unfinished attic changing the box to a ceiling fan one is pretty straightforward.

That would be reasonable. We paid $250 / light to do that + switch and patching.

we use staples electric for this kind of work.

So today the guy from electric company #2 calls me and says they will do the whole job (recessed lights in kitchen and the ceiling fans) for $1200. This is about $800 less than his prior estimate! Ughh.

And the $200 recessed lighting bid? My vote is that was per light and not the entire job.

Direct Current in Falls Church is reasonable. When we bought our house last year, we had to replace the breaker/fuse box, add 6 new outlets, install 5 ceiling fans with new junction boxes and install 2 outdoor flood lights. All that work only cost about $5,500. http://www.directcurrent.us/

That's right. There's no floorboard in our attic.

Having wired our entire lower level and also pulled wires through existing walls, I can assure you it is a lot more complex than the "half hour per room"/$200 max folks realize.

I don't know if the price is fair or not but I am fairly certain it will take a couple of hours per fan to do it correctly.
