Yes... women always want to read more into something that there is. They are so self absorbed they think the everyone is hitting on them even when they are just being nice.

Man here. I do occasionally compliment people (usually) at work if they appear to have really put together a nice outfit or otherwise seem to have made an extra effort. But it's always motivated by genuine kindness rather than some desire to "bang."

OP, you need to tell us the gender and what was said. I agree if it's a woman commenting on a man's outfit, she's just trying to be nice. If it's a man commenting on a woman's outfit, it depends what was said. I've had male co-workers tell me that a particular color looked good on me, or ask me where I got a blouse because they thought their wife would like it....I don't think either one was hitting on me.
Now, if someone said "Wow -- I like the way that dress fits you in all the right ways in all the right places!", I would definitely think he was flirting (or trying to).

What he says: "Nice shoes."
What he means: "Wanna f***?"





Actually, I don't think that's true at all. My view is that people usually look good in something on purpose, so it's okay to tell them if I notice. This week I've complimented a coworker's dress and a guy in the elevator's backpack. I wasn't hitting on either one.

I wouldn't think twice about it. But then I come from a country where people are allowed to talk to other people, and tell them they look stunning, their outfits are lovely, etc.

There's a prohibition on inter-gender personal comments in this country, so of course every time one is made everyone speculates insanely. Which is why prohibition doesn't work.
