This comforts me. I just started to pay this hourly rate to a tutor.

We paid $120/visit for a weekly physics tutor (AP Physics) years ago. DD is now a doctor. All the tutoring for AP math/science, we also are in FCPS, was well worth it. Is your DS genuinely interested in science, in biology. If so a tutor is worth it. If he's just collecting AP classes, then you might be able to assume he'll do as well as anyone else.

See if your school offers free tutoring or after school tutoring from the honor society kids.

I second Khan Academy. They have very straightforward lessons in the sciences now.

Have your child ask around to see if any National Honor Society or Upper level science students are tutoring. Many of the HS honor societies require service hours and tutoring students counts. So there is no cost on your end and your child benefits from an older student who may have tips for succeeding with that particular teacher.

This is why Asian kids succeed. I am Indian and I seriously spend a large portion of my spare time tutoring my kids.

It might be worth checking with the Guidance counselor to see if your DC could get into a different section of the class with a teacher who uses the standard 9th grade bio curriculum and textbook. I doubt that they all have decided to approach it as a quasi-AP class, and students are meant to take regular Bio first.

I used a company that had drop in subject tutors. We used them occasionally when my DD didn't understand a particular unit or felt she needed further explanation before an exam. It was not a regular thing and she usually was good to go with just one hour of tutoring. The tutors for the company were very knowledgable of the county curriculum.

OP,

Did your child have good grades last year in all subjects, particularly science and biology? If so, I don't quite understand why she would be so lost now.

I had difficulties in math at that age, stemming from many years of barely keeping up. When suddenly I chose the more advanced math courses in high school (for med school), it became too much for me. My father dedicated his evenings to explaining it all over again. To this day I am so grateful to him!

You can look for a college student who will instruct your child for less. You can look for a high schooler as well.
Or, you can make the effort and teach her yourself! It won't be 7 hours every weekend, since you are now more familiar with it.

+1. My daughter is in high school and she is tutoring elementary and middle school kids for $20, and HS kids for $25. Parents love her. She is doing it for two years now, paid by herself for her first new iPhone.

This is not a AP biology class. This is 9th grade biology.
But the teacher told that she likes the AP text book better.
So all material taught from both regular and AP text book.
Last week was only 4 days of school. Biology class was twice in those 4 days.
Both the days there was no teaching. Just getting to know other kids and teachers and how the class works etc etc.
But a whole chapter with a bunch of section numbers and some teacher provided worksheets is sent out.

An example of what the student did not understand is: a concept is presented in textbook with a bunch of unfamiliar jargon.
To familiarize with that jargon (which in itself can be many tiny lessons) and then trying to understand the whole thing took us this long.

I cannot afford huge tutoring fees.

Thanks to many of you who have responded back with your experiences.

OP, it is clear to me that English is not your first language. Is it your son's first language? If not, perhaps he's having a language barrier issue. If you want to go the tutoring route, reach out to smarter kids in the school - I'm sure you could pay them around $20 or $25 an hour. But first, your son needs to go to his bio teacher tomorrow and say "I am completely lost, don't think I'm going to pass this week's quiz, and really need your help. When do you have remedial time?"

Our school has peer tutors during lunch. Maybe yours does too?

Or maybe he needs to form a study group with other kids in his class.

Why don't you talk to the counselor for suggestions. Maybe he can switch teachers? 9th grade bio was one my DCs easiest classes and he's not a science kid at all. So something is off here.

OP, I would be very concerned if he is this behind after only two classes. If he is needing this much support this early in the school year perhaps he needs to go into a lower level class.

A student placed in the appropriate class should not need seven hours of one on one tutoring the first week of school. If this is his jumping off point, he is in big trouble.

Oh, OP, Khan Academy has branched out from math! There is help online for biology. Take a look and see if it helps.

https://www.khanacademy.org/science/biology It's free.

Sheesh! I got an A in AP bio and zero help from parents. Has the material gotten super hard?
