Oh please, OP. My usually rambunctious 1st grader was so exhausted yesterday. First day of school - they are trying to figure out the dynamics. Don't stress out.

Maybe this was a factor. DS doesn't exactly hate sports, but he certainly doesn't particularly like them either and would usually rather do something else if possible.

My older son went through this in first grade, as well. Social kid but really doesn't like sports. I think first grade is when the sports/non-sports recess split really takes hold. My son told us he liked doing his own thing, and I should have taken him at his word. I asked his teacher, even the school counselor about it, and they (rightfully) told me not to worry. And I shouldn't have--he found his people.

And, as others have said, the ability to be on your own is important. As he's gotten older I've really come to appreciate his independence and totally understand his need to recharge on his own.

My younger son, who loves sports and is much more active, didn't experience this in first grade--and he's much less able to self-entertain.

I have a generally very social child who does this.
- So, Larlo, what did you do at recess today?
- Eemm... Nothing. I don't remember.
- Who did you play with?
- Eemmm... nobody.
- Hmm. Did you feel lonely?
- ??? Duh??? Why would I feel lonely???
