I would say go for it-- why not shake things up when you have the chance? You can probably round up some parents' groups and activities for a preschool-like experience.

I would be very, very skeptical of your ability to both find good jobs within 6 months. I grew up in a rural New England area and hardly any of my childhood friends still live there. The ones that do work in family businesses, are schoolteachers, or work retail and tourism jobs. Several families I know have moved back when one spouse found a good job, and the other spouse ended up really, really frustrated. And of course, cost of living out there can be much higher than people anticipate, relative to what you get paid.

I thought MDI as well. And I agree with the sentiments completely.

This. She's a kid, and there are good things about anywhere you could go. This needs to be a decision about the lives you envision a few years from now.

What are the benefits of living in the vacation home? Doesn't sound Luke you plan to rent out your NW house. Why isolate yourself there unless you love it? If you do love it, go. Four year old will adapt. But no if it means separating the family. DH needs you.

Just curious, what industry pays one year severance?? I though Biglaw was generous with 3 months. Your DH must have had some valuable skills.

He needs to get right to work getting another paycheck or means to live. I don't get why you would wander off to your vacation place with a population of 2,000 when you clearly couldn't get FT employment there. Keep the DC house until your dh gets back to work.

+1.

It's fine if you want to leave DC but unless you are independently wealthy your current plan needs some work.

I'd have to know specifically where the island is to give my input. Is it reasonable distance to a city where you can find decent restaurants, etc. What is it going to be like in the off-season?
