My son loves all the dystopian stuff. if yours loved the Hunger Games series, he will also probably really enjoy the Maze Runner series, the Divergent series and the Giver series (my son read most of these age 11--5th grade). check with your school's 6th grade program though because they may be reading the Giver at school and you would then need to hold off on that group.

np here, and I love these rec's, thank you! My 10 yr old DS loves fantasy but not the grisly aspects (i.e., loved Wrinkle in Time but I can't imagine him reading The Hunger Games). Are the Gregor series and the Dark is Rising series bloody or intense with killings? Thanks again.

Can be hard to find in the US, but the Time Rider series by British author Tom Scarrow - they are great, I really enjoyed them as a read alongside my DC.

Try some of the Young Sherlock Holmes series

I prefer the Shane Peacock series but the Andrew Lane series is very action packed.

The author of Artemis Fowl has a new series starting with A Reluctant Assassin that has a cool time travel element.

Alcatraz and the Evil Librarians is the start of a series by Brandon Sanderson and is a lot of fun.

Richard Peck- great historical pieces, especially consider Heroes

Phantom Tollbooth

Operation Red Jericho (The Guild of Specialists, #1) -These are great books in that they are written like a journal and include fold out maps specs and other elements.

City of Ember Series

Emerald Atlas start of a trilogy by John Stephens

Tangerine by Edward Bloor. Or any of his other books.
The Bartimaeus Trilogy.
Charlie Bone series, though it may be a bit too juvenile.
Pendragon series by DJ McHale
The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman
Enders Game - could be a series. I can't remember.
The lottery rose (serious subject matter if I'm remembering correctly)
Septimus Heap series
A series of unfortunate events
Gilda Joyce series - girl detective
Children of the lamp series
Eragon
The Worst Witch
Where the red fern grows
Half Moon Investigations - by the same guy who wrote the Artemis Fowl series
The Five Ancestors series
Redwall series
Heir Apparent - more for older kids but nothing to bad, especially compared to the hunger games.
Inkheart
The thief lord
