We don't keep our outdoor trash can outdoors all the time. It mostly stays in our garage and goes out on trash night, and comes back in that evening. We hose it out periodically. So yes, I really do care if it smells extra bad, and I would be highly irritated if I brought the can back in not realizing that you threw your dog shit in there. To those of us who don't handle your dog's poop on a daily basis, trust me- it smells way worse than ordinary trash. And no- I'm not a bitter person just because I'm not offering up my trash can as your pet's toilet. Would you think it appropriate for me to poop in a bag and throw it in your trash?


I think this is the same as the diaper question and perhaps it's because I live in a townhouse-y area where there aren't a lot of garages that I just don't hang out near my trash can that often. I'd actually bet you like 100 bucks that you could poop in bags and put them in my trash can for months and I'd never even notice.

We have a baby and I can't tell you how many times the garbage collectors didn't turn the garbage can upside down and left bags of dirty diapers in the bottom. Then DH and I get to wheel it back to the house for another week or reach in, dig it out, and throw it out at the gas station. For this reason we now try to not have small garbage bags in the garbage. Please don't add your small bag of dog poop to it. It will likely hang out for a week.

The fact that you have a hard time imagining that someone has a different reaction to the smell of dog poop in their trash can than you do is a character flaw, not an admirable sign of your own awesomeness. It stinks. You don't think it's all that bad. Other people do.

Also, it's not your trash can. Most people prefer that others do not use their personal property without asking first.

THIS. +1000 And I've actually lived next door to rude neighbors who did this, and it made me goddamn furious. They would toss their baby's shitty diapers in our trash can AFTER the trash had been picked up, because they knew their kid's poop stunk to high hell, and didn't want it stinking up THEIR cans for a week.
Deal with your own dog/kid poop and leave the rest of us out of it please. It's just common decency.

Yeah, I helped out a friend by walking her dog, and threw away the poop bag in our trash can and then got to smell dog poop any time I was near our trash can for a week until trash day rolled around. The smell was much worse than our usual trash smell.

Clearly your outdoor trashcan smells -

But I can tell you ours does not. Would i want to.put it over my head? no. But for the few minutes a couple of times a week I need to put in trash or take out the cans, there is no overpowering objectionable odor. Some of my neighbors cans, dear god, they are nasty. Try cleaning yours out with a hose and letting it dry Iid-open in the sun. We do that maybe once a year. Leave the dark side.

People who don't have dogs don't want to smell dog poop. Plus, as someone said above, if you put it in after the trash has been collected, it sits there for a week and stinks more. Mine is kept next to my house., and no, it doesn't usually stink so bad that dog shit wouldn't be noticed.
How far are you walking your dog that you can't hold onto it until you get home to your own trash?
