DH has been going out a lot with his recently divorced brother. He's been staying out all night and not coming home until the next morning/afternoon. He's been doing this for almost a year now, but the last few months he hasn't been wearing his ring. He even went as far as to try to "hide" his ring so I would think he had his ring on. I'm started to suspect he's really having an affair.

And yes, him taking off his wedding band doesn't bode well for him either.
You need to step back, take a long + hard look at your marriage overall and decide if you want to continuously live w/the suspicions you have daily.
Trust me, it is a grueling task.

I feel dumb right now- do other women thing it is dangerous to wear their engagement ring when they go out with friends, in terms of dc crime?

I am definitely on alert when I wear mine out at night (whether with friends or DH) but I still wear it. I turn my ring around when walking/en route so that the stone is against my finger. Then the ring just looks like a plain band from the outside. I'm probably not fooling anyone but it makes me feel like less of a target.
