Get new upholstered items (anything fabric that might transfer smells or bedbugs) and go used on the wooden pieces.

Look in the antiques section of CL in particular. I've gotten beautiful and unique stuff there. Also estate sales and other used furniture places.

I really prefer high quality old stuff to new furniture.

You need to be patient! Trust me, you can get amazing deals on CL. People moving, downsizing, divorces, etc are all reasons why these things are sold and fortunately for those who look for deals there are quite a few people who will not buy anything unless it is new. So there is not a lot of competition and frequently sellers are just desperate to sell.

Or anything for that matter. They can hide in wood furniture.

I would re-do your bathroom and buy from Ikea for furniture until you're ready to upgrade.
