It absolutely has an impact on the OP's life and on that of other kids legitimately enrolled at the school. It impacts them when classes get overcrowded. It impacts them when they don't make XYZ team or the school play because that kid took one of the spots. It impacts them when there aren't enough hardcopy textbooks to go around and they need one (happened to us). It impacts them when they allow only a portion of the students in a given grade to go on a field trip (as in Civics in our MS, when only half the kids taking this required course were allowed to go on the field trip to the Fairfax courthouse). It impacts them when students move around for various electives and suddenly find themselves with no desk to sit at (as happened to my kid during an "enrichment" type of period in ES. There were 32 kids in his class during the regular subjects and no room to add another desk).

Everyone knows that schools that are perceived as more desirable are overcrowded and have atrocious class sizes. People who cheat make it worse.

I'm not quite understanding what the family in question did. It seems like they rented the apartment short-term, for a couple of months, using that lease as proof of residence? All of my apartment leases have been a year long. Or did they sublet that lease?

Gosh, come to think about it, a lease is incredibly easy to type up and is somewhat of a dubious method of proof of current residence. I could type up a lease today for anyone off the street and say that they are renting a room at my house.

OP, I wouldn't have a problem letting the school know if I was sure (as you seem to be). You just tell them what you know and let them take it from there. If there is another kind of placement going on, fine.

I'm not in a school zone where people would try to sneak in (well, maybe some from the ones that are struggling even more than mine). To me, this is just about playing fair. We all know where the boundaries are. Clearly the family at issues knows. We all know that the price of housing reflects the school that it is zoned for. These people, surely mean well for their child, but they want their cake and they want to eat it too! I don't get to do that and I wouldn't want others to do that. Fair is fair. If I wanted to live in Woodson's district (or Oakton, or McLean), I would find the money to move there. I don't want it that much, so I'm staying where I am.

I play by the rules and expect other people to play by the rules.... that's the social contract we have here.

The parent is making the risk to turn the kid's life upside down. Think about it, this is the same as stealing from the kids who are entitled to attend the school. And, the parent is not likely to go to jail. Are you sure you aren't the perpetrator in this case?

Honestly I know school systems will follow up on this stuff eventually, even have criminal charges of fraud brought up agains the parents in certain circumstances. Is it wrong and illegal? Yes!!! Will they likely be caught eventually? Yes. Would I want to be the one to report that and turn a kids life upside down with a parent possibly in jail? Probably not!!!!
