Squirrel Hill has some blocks that are entirely Orthodox Jewish families and they tend to be less...neighborly toward outsiders. Shadyside is nice.

No, no, no. It's full of people who have never left or who went to college away and moved back. It's hard to "break into" that dynamic. Also while it might not snow as much as DC these days, it's constantly overcast/rainy. If youre're serious, get on match now and buy yourself a SAD lamp. It ain't called Sh$@?burg for nothin.

We almost moved there. Very diverse city, and over the last 10-20 years, it has really modernized and attracted a lot of tech industry.
We looked at Cranberry and Mars area. Schools were good. But commute might be a bit much.

Pittsburgh is awesome. Amazing theater, art, etc. Food scene is up and coming. Shady side is a bit pricier but there are so many other neighborhoods with their own personalities and everything is super close in (assuming you stay on the city versus the burbs).

What kind of 'not white' are you? The universities draw a lot of east and southeast asian intellectuals, but there still isnt' a large black community in pittsburgh. And Pittsburgh is still a fairly segregated town.

That said, it's a wonderful town. Go visit. You'll absolutely be able to get a mortgage or rent something for less than $1500/month.

My best friend moved to Pittsburgh and she loves it. Way cheaper than DC and good culture. I really loved it when I've visited.

Don't know the area myself but my husband is from Mt Lebanon and he loved it. We'd move there if we could. Enjoy!

Actually, this year Pittsburgh got less snow than DC did.

Pittsburgh is not in the snow belt.

I am not white & thought places like Mt. Lebanon, Wexford, Squirrel Hill, Shady Side, & Friendship were diverse enough for me. There are other neighborhoods that I did not even list that are diverse. Its a charming city.

Friends just moved there and love it. Housing is much less expensive. Not sure about schools--they opted for private.
