I think it is actually healthier for a 17 year old to disengage/engage with family in a normal fashion like this. Teens need to pull away and return to their parents and it needs to be a natural feeling. Often, kids are forced into family time and their pulling away has to be rebellious and that is unhealthy. You don't want your 17 you to feel like you are treating him like a baby. He is old enough to do some stuff on his own and when he is with you it is not forced.

I come from an extended family that is ALL about togetherness, we are the opposite of what DCUM thinks is normal I think for sure! But even we all take time to do our own things on vacation whether with immediate or extended family. Not everyone wants to bike ride one morning, 2 people want to get pedicures and 3 don't, all good. Its about relaxing after all!

No problem with this at all.
We just got back from a similar vacation - resort in the Carib. My kids are teenagers and young adults. We did some family activites but we were adamant that everyone get the chance to do the activities that they wanted.
