OP here. Thanks for recs! I bought & read Elliott Holt's book in three days - awesome read. And good representation of the area in that time period (I'm around the same age & grew up here too).

Eric Andreas, dc attorney and geologist. His book is called "origins rising" I think. Fabulous read, sci fi, and I hope he writes a sequel.

I liked The Increment best. Had mixed feelings about The Director, which I think is his most recent.

Pelecanos is my favorite. I also enjoyed the Eliot Holt book mentioned by PP.

I went to West Springfield HS with Louis Bayard. He has written several works of fiction.

Margaret Truman (Daughter of Harry and Bess Truman) has written several novels based in DC

Not sure he still lives in DC, but Christopher Buckley's books are funny and often set here.
