We were in TJ Maxx and she saw a purple Jansport she liked. So we got that. For $20 and it comes with lifetime guarantee. It is full size so it can hold her Friday folder and lunch box with room to spare.

We just went shopping for backpacks and the Pottery Barn kids small Mackenzie was the best fit for my 5 year old. It felt sturdy, had some good features and hit him at the right spot on his back. The LL Bean packs were fine, but sat a little low.

Old fashioned Jansport basic backpack. Only 2 compartments (main one and small one) so not a lot of places for kids to hide things. Not too big, but big enough to hold folders and jacket.

We got a backpack from Lands End for kindergarten, and was kind of beaten up after a year of use.

For first grade, we got the LL Bean Discovery backpack, and it has worn like iron. It still looks brand new after a full school year. My son has declined getting a new backpack, and he'll carry this one to second grade, too.

Even if they have cubbies, there are several times per school year when I have the class put their backpacks somewhere else. (Like if we're going to be elsewhere in the building at the end of a school day for a special project, and I'll dismiss them directly from there.) Also, I think initials on the backpacks or an easy to find name tag is wise and makes life easier for everyone. I don't put my DC's name on our backpacks, though, as I don't want strangers learning his name that way. --elementary teacher

Are kids typically allowed to get up and drink during class hours? No water fountain breaks? Please clue me in.


My kids K class had a 10 minute snack break every morning. They are allowed to have access to water bottles or water fountains during centers time, but not during mat time with the teacher.
