we've had good experience with McCarthy Services. We could have had a pricey experience, but we were under warranty -- maybe yours is too? but lesson learned for us -- get it serviced every year!!!

I think Angie's list charges businesses to be included. Checkbook is much more objective, IMHO.

My AC has died twice in ten years due to a blown capacitor: http://www.ehow.com/info_8690667_ac-capacitor.html.

It kind of sucks as a repair because you pay about $200 for a 10 minute service to replace a part you can buy on amazon for under $50, but it is a lot less than a new compressor.

I like Shanahans in Springfield (703) 321-9622. They are highly rated in Consumer Checkbook and one of the few contractors that has ever talked me into doing lower cost repairs when I requested more expensive replacement work.

I would buy my stuff online myself and find a person to put it in or use the pricing to negotiate.

I highly recommend

S & L AIR CONDITIONING AND HEATING LLC (240) 595-0478

We have a home warranty through AHS and always request them specifically when we need service. They are great, honest and reliable.
