I hear you OP. My MIL thinks that everyone in the family is just fine with sleeping on the floor or in crappy beds/futons/sofas for the sake of "family time." In all honesty, I would enjoy family time at her house more if I were allowed to leave at 8 to go to a hotel and actually sleep in a comfortable bed. She probably just doesn't know how uncomfortable everyone is, or maybe she expects everyone to just suck it up? Or maybe she thinks that it's romantic and cute to have "everyone under one roof" regardless of your comfort level.

I really hope your husband wouldnt actually take the bed from you.

My family does this and it can be a lot of fun. But op situation sounds very annoying.

This would have sounded fun to me in my teens and early twenties. As a pregnant woman with two kids and a husband? No way. Motel/hotel would be the only way and even that would have been pushing it for just the 4th of July.

Was your dh biotching that he had to sleep on the futon? What prompted this suggestion from your MIL in the first place?

I would not have agreed to this trip. Nonetheless, I would have suggested MIL give up HER bed for DH instead.

Just handle it with your dh. Of course you get the bed. Duh.

It's not really a vacation when you have that many people under one roof (especially from the same family). Why aren't more of you staying in a hotel?

Ugh. I wouldn't have the grace to ignore that. I'd try to be pleasant but I would absolutely say "You know, I married him because he would never dream of having me sleep on the floor when 6 mths pregnant and dealing w/ sciatica. "

But yes, I'd also stay at a hotel from here on out!

I would have stayed in a hotel/motel from the get go.

Not completely related to your vent, but I was able to get physical therapy prescribed for sciatica in my last pregnancy and the therapy mainly consisted of a weekly massage at the PT office. It made a world of difference.

Why wait? Imagine how comfortable you'll be at the nearby Four Seasons! Hell, imagine how comfortable you'll be at the nearby Comfort Inn.

+1

And, man, too bad you passed up the chance for a relaxing few days at home. I vote go home a day early and have a massage booked when you get back!

Oh my god. This is my MIL - step and fetch and get disgusted over the fact that my husband cooks on occasion and that I -GASP- drunk BEER, from a BOTTLE!! She actually told me how un lady-like she thinks it is. Guess what I only drink around her now?

OP, I've learned she's completely codependent so I manipulate the situation and realize that if I just flat out ask her for help "oh Mildred, my back is in so much pain lately you're so good at navigating these things and I know you managed so well when YOU were in my position" she becomes my greatest warrior.

OP, get a hotel room next time. Problem solved.

I have to say OP, instead of getting so annoyed, I would just engage gently. I usually inadvertently do this because I'm oblivious to the fact that people would be so thoughtless of others. "MIL, why do you think he should get the bed?" Then you can get a chance to say, "Oh that's not how our relationship works!" with a big smile, or something like that so you've been completely pleasant, but a little satisfied that you confronted her directly. In any event, good luck! Happy 4th!

I really don't understand why families cram into one house without enough beds for everyone. Is it 5 people per bathroom? Get a hotel.
