I did, for an expected service position (not attorney or anything scientific).

Anonymous wrote:Not OP but it is so hard to get in. They want technical expertise that only someone who's done that EXACT job before could be qualified for. The requirements are insane.

My sister is biologist and they asked if she had performed very rare testing on animals as one of her questions. The only people who would even do this test are current USDA biologists! Questions like that are set up to fail people. The HR office ended up not getting one qualified candidate and had to repost the job.

They're not set up to fail people, they're set up to find the right people. If the job requires specialized knowledge they have every right to ask for it. If they find no one, they repost. It isn't a huge conspiracy.

PP here again-I should have added that I'm in a field that rarely, if ever, sees qualified vets apply.

Yes, about 3 months ago. I did get help with my federal resume from non-agency fed friends.

Yes, but Foreign Service not Civil Service. Tough process to go through, but the career is amazing.

Were you coming from industry? All the science PhDs I know who went into academia are getting paid less than a GS-14 and they work a hell of a lot harder.

A year ago yes. I was meticulous about the application. I had a friend that is a federal employee look over it. And DH reviewed it for any errors. Whole process took 6 months from application to starting day.

I started in January. But the job I took was a direct hire position- veterans preference didn't come into play. My agency is hiring again but now it's competitive- there were no non-vets who made the current referral list.

My husband did in April. Fits what you described but he did put in a word after he made the initial round. Took about 15 months of trying and wasn't easy or smooth.
