My kids have never watched the Disney channel either, but that's only because we don't have cable. My 5 year old knows Mickey Mouse though, because there is a clip of him on the Frozen DVD as one of the extras.

Not PP but I don't intend to go to Disney either. It's silly to assume everyone would definitely go if not for money. I assume we could afford it if that were our vacation for the year (I don't even know how much it costs but DH and I make decent salaries), but I have plenty of other things I'd rather spend the money on. I never went to Disney as a kid, never felt I missed out, and don't plan to take my kids unless my husband puts up a huge stink about it. We went to other amusement parks when I was a kid but my parents hated standing in line and since we never watched cartoons anyway, we didn't care. We did watch the Disney movies but that was before it was such a huge thing, with the marketing and stuff -- or at least my parents didn't buy any of it.

When I was in my late teens, my grandparents offered to take a bunch of us cousins to Disney because none of us had ever been. I was in college so I had better things to do. My sister went and said it was ok but not worth it, that our usual family vacations were much better. So that pretty much sealed the deal for me. If my kids beg to go at some point, I would consider it, but I'm not going to be the one to suggest it to them.

I'm a first generation american and love mickey mouse and disney. My fondest memory was with the chipmunks at disney when I was 4. Have been there a few times after. Also grew up watching classic mickey and disney cartoons.

My DD does and has since she was a toddler, probably because I love DW so much and he's really the heart of everything there even if he's not the most visible part of the Disney media.

It floored me that when we took her to DW for the first time at age 2 that my child who was painfully shy with even adults and some kids that she was familiar with, ran straight into Mickey's arms when she had the chance to meet him at a character lunch. Thankful that whoever was being Mickey that day was so kind with her and let her just snuggle up to him, feel his face, kiss him, etc. Since then, she's had the chance to meet Santa and some other supposedly familiar characters but she was terrified of all of them except The Mouse.

When we went back a year later, we came around a corner and Mickey was doing photo ops on one of the lawns. DD saw him and was baffled that we wouldn't let her go up to him and say hi (as in, walk past everyone in the very long line that she didn't really understand since he was a friend).

The kids who don't know Mickey Mouse must be fairly young. It's part of broader culture and your kids will know in elementary school whether you go to Disney or not.

My kids grew up in Europe until early elementary and didn't really know but figured it out when we got back.

FWIW, we've been to Disney (Paris, Orland and LA) several times and my kids have a blast. It's kind of cool because it's a vacation aimed at their interests. We've done it enough that I don't feel compelled to do it again, but the kids would like to. We'll see. I think their grandmother may take them and I'll be off the hook.

My children were the same way. All they wanted to do was to go on rides.

Yes, they know who Mickey Mouse is, they are far more interested in other characters though.

FWIW we go to Disney World about 4 times a year, Disneyland 1 time and do a summer cruise.

That's how it would be for my kids. If I took them elsewhere Kings Dominion or Cedar Point, it would be just as good. As a kid back in the day, Disney had more meaning, and if someone said we're going to Disney World, it would create more excitement than any other amusement park.

Yikes. Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Kids watch TV, just didn't realize Mickey Mouse was a 'thing' for anyone. Princesses, maybe Pixar characters, yes, but Mickey Mouse? And the Disney production information shown at the beginning of Disney movies that has Mickey (or is it just tinkerbell?) is just the visual equivalent of white-noise.
