My child's kindergarten has recess once a day for 35 minutes, nap time for the first half of school, gym 3 times a week, music 2 or 3 times, art for an hour a week, and I never felt it was too academic... all they were learning were the sight words, which they did in many creative ways, and then counting to 100, and colors, but it was definitely not sitting in their desks all day. One of my sons, like to stand and sing while he worked, and that didn't bother the teacher at all. My kids LOVED K. And they were late summer birthdays.

An fcps elementary - it's awful. Parents are moving out of this neighborhood to get out of the school. Some are happy, but there seems to be a large minority - maybe 25% - of kids that are just miserable and can't cope there. The classes are way overcrowded, but fcps keeps adding things to the school- stupid FLES (Chinese? Really??), head start, etc. Every year we get two or three new programs that take up space and money, but we don't have enough teachers for regular classes and we don't even have basic resources like books for the kids in reading groups (they read little xerox books that they staple together themselves and the teacher downloaded from the internet).


Please name the school. This is useless unless you name the school.

Yes, I would. There is absolutely nothing that PP wrote that can be tracked back to her or him. Why wouldn't you want to let the entire community know about these problems?

That's exactly what I expect my 5 year old to do. They play enough at home.


Most children need breaks to play and release energy. A five year old cannot be taught in the same manner as an older child. Your kid might be different, but most need a lot of play and not on a "home only" schedule. Their cognitive and biological needs don't cycle in five hour blocks of time.

When five year olds are sitting and writing, they are learning to sit and write. That is not what I think a five year old should be doing. There is no advantage in doing that at five.







That's exactly what I expect my 5 year old to do. They play enough at home.

The paper books are leveled readers--every school doesn't do them? They are just short really dull stories marked "level a". "level f" etc.

My son's K teacher has been sending home those silly paper books all year. They are way too easy for him. I don't know what's wrong with real books?!?!


What do you mean by paper books?
