I can speak to driving to Ballston for sports, and it's not a bad drive at all from where I live on the Langley side (on my cul-de-sac!). I work in Herndon, which is against traffic and takes me about 20 minutes in the morning, about 30 in the evening thanks to everyone trying to get back home to MD from Tysons.
No idea why the PP found people in NoVA unfriendly. I don't find that to be the case at all. People are very busy though, so maybe it seems that way?
Anonymous wrote:What school area / area of town would you move in NOVA for the following:
neighborhood with friendly people (relatively friendly)
nice grocery stores like whole foods, trader joes, etc
good school curriculums with good after school programs
good sports like gymnastics, soccer, tennis, fitness club
nice restaurants with ethnic cuisine
running trails / biking trails
budget of house:
up to 2mm for a 5 bedroom house
tiny yard with space for a small garden
house must be on cul de sac or non busy rd
Am willing to consider Loundon, fairfax and arlington however commute is from Reston so no more than 30-45 min commute.
Try Oakton, it is beautiful and with your budget you'll get an amazing home with a larger backyard. The schools are always top notch.
I have been to a lot of areas but am really undecided on nieghborhood / school pyramid area.
thanks for your thoughts
Within about 2 miles you can get:
- Greek
- Italian (maybe 10 restuarants)Downtown McLean so-to-speak (albeit adjacent to Tysons with TONS of restaurants) has
- Indian
- Korean BBQ
- Brazilian BBQ
- Thai (maybe 4 places)
- Chinese (who knows how many)
- Turkish
- Lebanese - also downtown has a lebanese market
- Kabob (persian - maybe 4 places)
- Peruvian rotisserie chicken
- Mexican
- Steakhouses - J Gilberts, Capital grille, plus all the fancy chain ones you can imagine

Or if you are considering private school Belle Haven in zip code 22307.
Anonymous wrote:I would live in Oakton or the western side of Vienna. Nice neighborhoods, good schools (either Oakton or Madison), close to Fairfax Gymnastics. (McLean doesn't have much gymnastics - closest is Arlington, Fairfax or Chantilly). You can join Vienna Youth Soccer or a Fairfax club. There are pool and tennis clubs around, depending on what you like (Fairfax Raquet Club comes to mind). Vienna, Fairfax and Reston all have restaurants although a lot of the ethnic restaurants are in Falls Church and Annandale.
