Shorter PP: I am not a teacher, but I know how to be a teacher better than teachers do.
maybe if you're smarter than the teacher you could figure out that it's not the teachers who determine the school calendar but usually the superintendent

That might be a valid point. Maybe HS kids? We've used the Winter/Spring break camps and they are always staffed, so it seems to work out.
And, my friends who do year round school still do get a whole month in the summer, so it's really only a matter of about 5 weeks. They find it easier to take vacations during other parts of the year, so they often don't need as much childcare.

Parents in year round school systems seem to have worked it out.

The strongest arguement I have heard against all year school is how to staff the necessary childcare / camps without college kids being home. This is a reality that can't be dismissed. In the summer there is a surge of additional labor that does not exist at other times.

No, it works for you so you don't want to change it. It does NOT work for everyone.
We're at a focus school in MoCo and lower income students would definitely benefit from the schools being open year round.

I'm not a teacher but think 90% of my kids teachers have been fabulous. We've had just 2 I didn't care for but I think even those teachers were working hard. It shocks me that there is so little respect for teachers. We have many teachers who email me on the weekend or in the evenings from home so I know they're working even on days off.

That's just it. The schedule we currently have works terribly for students and teachers. I've taught under a traditional American schedule and a year round British schedule. There is less burnout under the year round schedule, less having to spend time at the beginning, and less exhaustion and wasted time. For those of you who say it's a week of review. It's really a month of review (esp. in math) and a month of getting to know the different reading and writing levels of individual students and grouping dynamics.

Yes NC has year round school. Please note their students test scores/sAT/ act are not even comparable to those here. The education system there is one big mess
