Why don't you go with them?

Yes, just use common sense and graciously decline.

+1. MIL keeps pushing us to go away for a few days and leave our 9mo and not-quite-3yo with them. Not happening. I just say that I think they're too young/I'm not ready to be separated, and let's all plan a family vaca together instead. I like them a lot and don't want to keep them away from their grandkids - quite the opposite - but I know from experience that they're not quite up to keeping up with 2 babies/toddlers alone in their mid-70s. I know she wants the responsibility and the one-on-one time, but sorry, no way.

We left a 3 and 4 year old with my parents staying in our house for 1 week. They were in pre-K 1/2 day 5 days/week plus I had regular sitters in the PM. Those children went to pre-K and the sitters came.

Try something like that and get away for a long weekend once they are toilet trained. Meanwhile have them stay overnight in your house for oodles of baby sitting.

Can you go with them? If not I wouldn't take a chance with a 4 yr old.

I have this issue with my dad and step mom. I would send my child anywhere any time with my dad. I wouldn't send my child to the grocery store with my step mom. She never had kids herself and really doesn't get the younger years. My dad is awesome though. I get to make excuses for why I'll send DS away for a weekend of fishing with grandpa at age 3, but not for a trip to the smoky mountians with grandma and grandpa

Your poor DH.

New poster here but my husband feels the same way.
Poor your KIDS.

I didn't make this comment on your post, and I don't judge your parenting choice, but your choice of "me" could have been what the pp is reacting to.

Drowning is the top killer of kids. 4 year olds are too hard to watch at that age, esp. around the water. My children's grandparents are very "spry" and I wouldn't allow this.

Have the 4 YO wait a couple of years. My rule was, no beach vacations without parent until they can swim.
