Many hotels let kids stay free, and occupancy limits are usually 5, not 4. Of course you can still stay in one room as a family of 5. This is not a problem or issue for most people; I'm always surprised by the DCUMers who act like it is.

I think what has changed since I was a child is the online check in where you identify the number of people in a room. There are some places where you have to give a number (Disney World, for example), but for most places I just don't tell them how many people will be in the room. That's not to avoid extra fees - I have always done that.
Disney has several properties that allow five people in one room (ditto for the disney cruise).

We have four kids. Lots of hotels will allow a rollaway. Some have couches. It's easy to tuck a toddler in bed with the parents. Again, we have four and still travel.
Passing on a third because you *might* have an issue with *some* hotels at some point is perhaps one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

Subject: s/o traveling with 3 kids
I have three and we always get one room if we are paying for it. There has been times when my mom has paid for it as part of some kind of family vacation and she has gotten us a suite or two rooms. That has been nice, but totally not necessary.
