Tj was in need of renovation since the early 2000's. It is about time.

The renovations are far more extensive than the rotunda.

But I think they could have postponed/cancelled the rotunda and used the money where it is actually needed.


+1000. But then the School Board also could have decided not to vote themselves raises while teachers make less in FCPS than in other jurisdictions.

Same attitude - as long as someone is being served caviar, it doesn't matter whether others are getting leftovers.

That's pretty horrible. Before the renovation process begun, however, TJ's building was also in pretty bad condition. Most of the facilities had not been touched since 1964 --ceiling tiles, doors, door frames etc. were untouched. The majority of the water fountains were broken at any given time and the bathrooms were also disgusting.

FCPS is spending $89.5 million to renovate TJ, more than was allocated for other schools that aren't topped off with private subsidies. Most of that money has already been spent. Only a small portion is offset by payments from Arlington and other jurisdictions.

Money is fungible, so suggesting private money paid for the silly rotunda is just a lie.

Just imagine all the basic repairs that could have been made at other schools with the money wasted on bells and whistles at TJ. Yet, they wonder why people object to tax hikes to give FCPS more money.

It's called PTA clout and their parents --- probably a lot of them busy just working to support families -- don't whine loud enough to be heard over the more entitled in wealthier areas.

The fact that TJ takes private contributions to subsidize and perpetuate the inequities in FCPS only makes matters worse. It reduces the pressure to adequately fund the renovations that ought to take precedence at needier schools, if you can point to a shiny new science lab at TJ. Too bad that no corporation is providing matching funds to renovate other schools. You can shove your "tjpartnershipfund" up your ass.



What I don't understand is why FCPS isn't creating ways to fund their neediest schools. If they were to request for specific contributions from the community, I bet they would get them. I see many schools setting up separate funds for the arts, a fund for books, a fund for computers, a fund for young scholars, etc.
