It could've taken the victim a while to get the courage to confront him.
Molestation would be a he-said-she/he-said. I'm not sure Hastert would pay what has to amount the bulk of his net worth on an allegation that likely couldn't be proven. I also think any molestation charges would have come out when he was in office. I'm guessing he did something illegal that involved a big pay-off/bribe while he was a in the House. I'm also guessing that the person bribing him is someone who worked for him.
I don't think it's a he-said/she-said anymore - paying this much hush up money makes it pretty obvious that he's guilty.

I would also assume there is some evidence from the time, or an incriminating recording, something like that. $3.5 million for an out-of-the-blue allegation from decades ago is a lot. And why not hire a lawyer and reach a proper settlement? Or is something like that public? (Asking you lawyers out there.) Thinking of the Bill Cosby cases.

Sadly this is probably right. But it does surprise me, having worked in politics a long time, that this wasn't outed during his tenure as Speaker.

I was just talking with my husband about this. Said I was completely confused. He read online coverage for a minute and said well, its obvious - he was molesting boys, probably his wrestling students. Hate to say it, but I guess that makes sense. Why else would you pay enormous amounts of money indefininitely? You can get past financial misconduct - almost merits a 'meh' anymore - but there's no getting past child molestation - especially homosexual child molestation. I hope that's not the case, but given recent (and not so recent) events, it wouldn't surprise me.

Not necessarily. He may have just not wanted the allegation to even come up possibly because there could've been more victims.
