OP here. Interesting comments coming in. Truthfully, I'd not heard of this baby fed weaning topic before. I think I will just do as some of you have, let her have the spoon (and she does sometimes take it from me, ends up banging in against her tray and such), and we'll see what happens, how I guide with maybe another spoon. Umm this is an odd comment. We did BLW, my parents did it with me ( I was born in 82). I don't think it is a fad. I don't see why actively spooning food into my mouth is a lovely moment of babyhood. Isn't there just joy in seeing them discover new food?

We started giving the baby a spoon when he started trying to grab it while we fed him. So one for him, one for us. He's a little over a year and still not using it really at all, but I think someday he'll figure it out. And it sometimes helps keep his hands too busy to intervene in our feeding efforts.

And your baby is not better or more advanced for being spoon fed, that wasn't the goal. I still sat with my child and talked and laughed along with him as he discovered food.

NP here, and really? Missed a part of her child's babyhood? You're a little dramatic and a lot judgey. Don't show your insecurity in your own choices by demeaning those who did it differently. Own your choices, but realize others take a different tack. It's no more wrong or right than what you did, just different.

I also did baby led weaning and loved it (so much fun seeing a 9 month old feeding themselves!), but I don't judge other parents who chose to introduce solids in a pureed state. And if BLW hadn't gone well, I would not have hesitated to try purees.

OP, I just gave our DS a spoon when we ate things like oatmeal, yogurt, guacamole, etc. I'd stick the spoon in while he held it and let him guide it to his mouth himself. I also did the same with a fork, but a bit later. Make sure you're giving them real utensils in a child sized version with easy to hold/chunky handles and metal spoon/tines. I liked the IKEA ones.

My 17 month old always eats with a spoon--in one hand, while he shovels food into his mouth with his other hand. He's got the concept of the spoon, and sometimes he gets some food on it, and sometimes he gets that food into his mouth, but usually he uses his fingers in some way or another. I assume he'll get it at some point.

It obviously worked for her...... i bet she didn't miss cleaning up the mess! We feed miss 7 months with a spoon but i give her one to play with as well
