At my son's 6yo party with both boys and girls attending I just gave them bags which they filled with pinata stuff. Nothing in addition to that.

I bought cheap fishing nets. It was a family birthday party and we had kids from 2 years old to 9 years old. They all loved the fishing nets.

The mini lego sets that are around $5 were a big hit and my DS last party. We bought both "girl" and "boy" sets - we just returned what we didn't give out.

chapter books, craft/building kit, pool toys (love that idea - like the dive toys), agree with below five gift card, match box car/small lego set, action figure (or equal for a girl).
No more bubbles, play dough, food (gets tossed), stuffed animals (kid hates them), weapons, stickers, crayons, coloring books

Just did this for my son's party with consisted of a dozen 4-6 year old boys. We got mostly owls, which were a major hit. They are cheapest if you order directly from the TY site.
