I think that's because it's hard to have sympathy for a group of kids jumping another kid -- while being filmed by another, probably to upload onto Youtube. Obviously the sub should be disciplined, but I'm not feeling to bad for those kids.

And you think there is no way to separate the victim from the perpetrators other than whipping them like animals?

I think some kind of physical force had to be used - obviously should have been done without a belt, but I don't think the sub would have been trained in any other method. I'm not defending how he did it, but breaking up the fight was the right thing to do.

People are sort of damned if you do, damned if you don't. A sub in Detroit was fired (and then re-hired) after breaking up a vicious fight with a broom. She stated that there was no way that she could break up the fight on her own. She was supposed to call security on a walkie-talkie, but (of course) it wasn't working.

I know several teachers personally that have been injured seriously trying to break up fights between students.

If you stand back and let them fight, you lose your job. If you break it up, you lose your job.

I kind of agree with the PP - the kids now know the sub doesn't take any shit. He probably won't have any more issues...

This is the post that I totally agree with.
