Yep. We got married here in DC and my whole family and all my college and childhood friends live on the West Coast. We didn't have "sides" at the church because of it -- it would have been awkward to see my side almost empty and his overflowing (he comes from a big family; I do not). I estimate the ration of guests at our small, <100 guest wedding was 3-1 groom-bride. That's what happens when you marry far from home.

I got married 18 years ago and truly didn't know fully 1/2 of the guests who attended our wedding and reception.

I wish these total strangers didn't attend my wedding.

That said, if the bride and groom don't care, neither should you.

Send a card and a a nice check and be done.

I am OP. I am not judging just lamenting how thie cards fell for this wedding.

I have two cousins getting married in California next year. One in April, one in early June. As a teacher, it is nearly impossible to take time off during the school year, so if we go it will be a 3 day weekend.

Plane tickets from DC to home are generally $4-500 each, plus incidentals along the way...so for 2 weddings, our family is looking at 30 hours of travel and $3000.

I love both my cousins dearly, but that's just not in the cards. I wish so much that it was...but I'm going to have to pick one or the other, and it's going to come across as playing favorites. I really hope none of the family members are judging us for the choices we are making!

Our family is all over and most still make it to weddings. Our wedding was in Washington VA and Aunts, Uncles and cousins came from Minn, Ind, NC, MA, Germany, friend came from Wash, Ore, New England........ However, our family is much smaller and wedding are few and far between. When there is a large family, there are too many weddings to attend everyone if they are far away.


I really should not have said" do not prioritize". The truth is there will another wedding next year.

Don't project your feelings onto him if he is perfectly content. My cousin got married at Disneyland with only immediate family in attendance. He wanted that. He got that. We respected his wishes.


I am surprised but not upset. I think nephew felt the same way. It just turned out to be a tough weekend for people to attend.
