Jus start telling MIL your DD wears a size larger than she does. Is your MIL buying clothes that match her age, like a size 8 because DD is actually 8? I know it is annoying, but in life keeping the peace in the family is important. Tell MIL daughter wears a larger size, even if it is a white lie. Or bite your tongue, say thanks and donate thclothes

Yes, this! Assuming you and she are two relatively well adjusted people, this should not be a problem. At all.

Also, how old is your kid? Who knows, your child might still be able to wear some of the clothes in the fall. Cool weather is only 5 or 6 months away. My son is only 3 years old, but he can wear his clothes into the next season.

Since this is a repeat performance why not tell your MIL?

MIL can't read minds. Unless you tell them exact sizes, this will continue and I'm pretty sure she doesn't like wasting money and never seeing the child wear what she bought.

A little communication goes a long way but of course it's easier to bitch and gripe. Very disrespectful.

Accept the clothes graciously. Take a picture of the child wearing them now then give it the clothes to a women's shelter or thrift store and get the tax donation. Give your MIL a copy of the picture once DD outgrows them. I know it's annoying, OP, but this is what has kept the family peace.

My MIL does this too. She asks what DD needs, I say "A long sleeve nightgown, would be great. She buys a sweat shirt and an ugly one at that. I just say thank you and toss it in the goodwill bin.

Keep doing this every time she gives you the wrong size. Also, keep her apprised in advance of your daughter's sizes. Add one size!
