Report them.
This made me think of the song "Lucy at the Gym" by Jill Sobule. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FxeyolDf6w8Anonymous wrote:There's a woman at our gym who will spend well over an hour on the stair master. Sweat flying everywhere, puddle around the machine on the floor, people waiting. She's in there every time I go in, whether during working hours or at night. Just being near her extreme intensity stresses (and grosses) me out.

She goes in, tries to find a spot in the back, but people like the safety of the back so it's usually "full." If it's possible, people try and make space for people. But this woman doesn't care, she will stand 8" from you. And she'll not only change spots every song, but 2-3x in the middle of a song. It's one thing to move into an empty spot, but she thinks it's a damn game of musical chairs or something all through class. And then sometimes she'll lie on the floor in the back of the room (where there are people, mind you - it's usually a packed class) and do stretches in the middle of zumba class.
I completely do not understand how some people have such little knack for basic social norms/etiquette.
How? Why? Poor parenting. She may be stressed, depressed, overwhelmed and just trying to cope. ADD. Another type of special need - they don't miraculously disappear as you age, people! Have some compassion.

There's a wait for stair masters? Those are the redheaded stepchildren of every gym I've belonged to, the equipment you don't use unless there's nothing else free and you can't wait.
