They always look miserable. Do they ever smile? I've never seen it (as adults).

Yes, the point of high fashion isn't glamour, although it can be glamorous. It is to be uncommon and in a different realm than everyday life. If you studied art, think of the mannerist paintings.

The picture was at a fashion ball a couple of nights ago in NYC with many celebrities deliberately going for a high-fashion look. I'd bet they look creepy anywhere but they had an excuse/justification - take your pick - that evening.

I'm 45. I know a lot of people in my age group who do not look that scary.

It looks like their hair, make up, clothes and expressions are all done to enhance their... odd... look. Were they at a Beetlejuice convention?
